Spring Break Trip with Center for Civic Engagement

Over UNL’s Spring Break, March 18-23, UNL Center for Civic Engagement will be traveling with students to Heart Mountain, WY, one of the United States’ Japanese internment camps that operated during WWII. Studying Japanese internment and serving at the Heart Mountain Relocation Center, student participants will think critically about the experiences of Japanese Americans, the treatment of minority groups in the United States, and how these topics are relevant to politics today. Below you can see our learning outcomes for this Service-Study ASB:

1. Develop an understanding of Japanese-American experiences, and their unique and important contributions to Great Plains society and culture.
2. Increase critical discussion of national security issues and the complex relationship of civil liberties and national security issues.
3. Confront issues and problems in American History.
4. Understand the long-term economic effects of the loss of wealth and land, and how reparations impacted this community.
