Favorite book and why: The Book of Disquiet by Fernando Pessoa. Pessoa is an incredibly elegant writer and the book tells a different story each time that I read it.

Favorite movie and why: Hacksaw Ridge. I really love war and football movies and Remember the Titans and Saving Private Ryan are too cliche to call my favorite movies.

Why Global Studies? Global Studies was appealing to me because it is so versatile. I loved my geography and history classes, the most interesting class I have taken is State Terror. I would highly recommend that all Global Studies and Political Science majors take the class. My advice for new Global Studies students is to have fun with signing up for classes, especially if they are coming in as freshmen or sophomores. They have so much time- you don't have to specialize in anything yet. If you are interested in African history and European history, take classes in both. Study French and Spanish, go on a study abroad to a country that you know nothing about. Have fun with it.

Education Abroad Experience: This summer I went on a faculty led study abroad program at UNL to Jaipur, India. I cannot say enough good things about the program. We did something new almost everyday- we learned how block-printing is done in India to decorate cloth, we saw the Taj Mahal, learned basic Hindi, we took yoga and cooking classes and the list goes on.

I am currently in Jaipur India on a Boren Scholarship to Study Hindi. It is a very intensive program. I have 20 hours of Hindi classes every week, I have a language partner 3 hours a week, I take Bollywood dance classes, block printing classes and I volunteer at an orphanage for HIV-Positive Orphans. I absolutely love every aspect of the experience and I highly recommend that other students from UNL apply for the scholarship.

Post-Graduation Plans: One of the benefits of the Boren Scholarship is that you are required to work for the federal government in national security for at least a year after you graduate. My post-graduation plan is to fulfill the federal service requirement by obtaining a position within the Civilian Security, Democracy and Human Rights office with the U.S. Department of State Internship Program. This office oversees the office to Monitor and Combat Trafficking in Persons. It addresses both domestic and international trafficking of people, which is an area of national security that I am incredibly interested in.
