Global Sustain+Ability Scholars program trains and supports rising young professionals from diverse backgrounds, disciplines, and worldviews. We are a professional community, working on global sustainable development challenges that face communities and environments.
We bring together the brightest undergraduate students and young professionals from under-represented groups to work with leading scientists on critical sustainability challenges that face communities and environments in the future. This effort spans cultures, borders and disciplines.
Each year we select 7-10 undergraduates from participating countries, to join a GSS cohort and the larger international sustainability solutions community. Each cohort of scholars will focus their training and research experience on a theme with in Sustainability. The 2018 cohort will focus on the Food, Energy and Water Nexus. We anticipate that the 2019 cohort will focus on Ocean Sustainability.
What Type of Qualities Make a Strong Candidate For this Program?
This program is geared for undergraduates who have completed two years of college course work and who can demonstrate through their course work and experience that they are self-directed, mature, and that they have a deep commitment to working in the field of sustainability science and an understanding of how issues of equity and justice interest must be addressed in sustainability solutions. Additionally, strong candidates must be able to travel and live in close quarters with the rest of the cohort, thus interpersonal skills are strongly appreciated. I Understand That the Program Pays a Stipend, but What Are the Costs That the Students Are Directly Responsible For?
The Global Sustainability Scholars program for undergraduates pays for one round-trip ticket from your home to the program and all travel to and from program sites, lodging, and a food stipend during the first 6-week summer experience. The second and third summer internships will have a very similar setup – Travel to the site, stipend for food, stipend for participation and depending on the location of where they will be interning, lodging will be completely paid for. Students will be responsible for luggage fees at the airport as well as their own incidentals including toiletries, snacks, souvenirs, and other personal purchases.
