Why Global Studies?
As a child of a counselor and a therapist I have always been interested in what background makes a person who they are. What shapes their opinions and creates their personality. Global Studies has provided me the perfect opportunity to figure out what makes a person or even a country decide the way they decide. Why did my neighbor vote for a liberal party, when they themselves are republican? Or how could a country once at peace, fall to the hands of terrorists groups? Or even, what is a line between a freedom fighter and a terrorist and how do these differ in the minds of people? These are the questions that Global Studies has allowed me to study and I love it. What I love even more is that Global Studies provides me a way to not just study, but actually go and experience what I learn in class. I can see how cultures shape its citizens, what values they hold dear and why. I do not know which way my future is leading, but I do know that Global Studies is helping shape my future. For new Global Studies students, I would suggest that they apply to as many opportunities they can. I believe that traveling abroad changes a person for the better and allows a person to truly become who they are supposed to be.
Study abroad experience: I have been lucky enough to have spent this past summer in Martinique, a tiny island in the Caribbean. This was an amazing experience that provided classes on the local culture and the language (French). Being able to study in an intensive background allowed to me to strive to be better. It also allowed me a chance to not only learn the history, but to see how the history of colonization and slavery have impact the natives of the island. Martinique was a very study focused trip, but it also provided with excursions to the beach and rain forests to see the different aspects Martinique encompasses. I loved Martinique and the friends I made while there. The study abroad experience has prepared me for future trips abroad and I cannot wait to see what comes next.
Post-Graduation Plans: I do not know which way my future is leading, but I do know that Global Studies is helping shape my future.
