Join us for a talk by Dr. Shanna Corner titled: Female Genital Cutting: The Contestation and Spread of a Global Human Rights Norm on Wednesday, January 22nd, 11:30AM-12:30PM followed by a lunch in Oldfather 827.

Description of talk:
At the intergovernmental level, norms against female genital cutting (FGC) have become well-established. However, variations exist in the ways countries and individual people respond to these norms. In this class, we will examine specific ways global FGC norms have influenced policies in different countries and individual people’s perspectives on FGC using findings outlined in an influential sociological study (Boyle 2002; Boyle et al. 2001). We will use these findings to briefly discuss and reflect on notable theorizing about the global diffusion of human rights norms.
