On Sept. 20, 2019, people of all ages all over the world will be walking out of their homes, jobs, and schools for a Global Climate Strike to demand climate justice and emergency action to tackle the climate crisis. Nebraska is joining the fight.

UNL Sustain, a University of Nebraska-Lincoln recognized student organization, says Nebraska has a unique opportunity to use the agricultural systems, grasslands, wind and solar potential, and Nebraska Strong spirit to be part of the climate solution, they’re advocating for conversation and action at the state level.

“Let's make some noise and demand climate action from our elected officials,” they wrote in their event announcement. “Like it says on our state capitol building, ‘The salvation of the state is watchfulness in the citizen.’ We need you, your neighbors, classmates, and coworkers to join us in advocating for policy that prioritizes the future of our climate for the sake of our generation and generations to come.”

The march will begin at 3 p.m. at the Nebraska Union’s Green Space ― located by the fountain on the west side of the union, 1400 R St, Lincoln — and then march to the Nebraska State Capitol, 1445 K St. Marchers are encouraged to begin lining up at 2:30 p.m.

Once at the capitol, participants will stand together to demand state-level climate action.

Updates to the event, including poster-making sessions and climate action story workshops, are posted on the student club’s Facebook page. For more information on the Global Climate Strikes, visit globalclimatestrike.net.

Sustain UNL advocates for creating a sustainable world through activism, education, and service engagement. In promoting the strike, they wrote:

“We are in the midst of the climate crisis. Sea levels are rising, forests are burning, people are evacuating, and species are going extinct. Our home is on fire and our future is uncertain. It’s time to take to the streets and demand the leaders of our state to take action!

“The human race cannot continue to do business as usual. We, the young people of Nebraska, have the power to change the status quo and ensure a livable future for ourselves and generations to come. We have a voice and we have a platform for our voices to be heard.”
