The School of Natural Resources is offering a "Nature Adventure Camp" July 16-20 on East Campus. The camp, open to children ages 10 to 12, includes opportunities to learn about nature, animal and habitat restoration through field trips, crafts and games.
Participants will spend most of the days outside.
“They need downtime, away from the stresses and screens that are in everyday life,” said Hanna Pinneo, camp director. “This will give them time to explore and be kids, and connect with nature in a way that gives them a life-long affinity for nature.”
Pinneo, who graduated in May from UNL, is organizing the camp with Lisa Pennisi, a School of Natural Resources expert on helping people connect with nature. Dennis Ferraro, herpetologist; Larkin Powell, wildlife ecologist; Tiffany Heng-Moss, entomologist; and John Quinn, ecologist, will help campers get to know different kinds of creatures in various settings.
Activities will include restoring a nearby pond to provide better habitat, catching insects and making collections, a birding tour, tracking animals, and orienteering. Transportation will be provided for field trips to natural areas in and around Lincoln, including Nine-Mile Prairie, Prairie Pines and Common Good farm.
The camp is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and costs $150. The application, which includes a brief essay by the camper, must be postmarked or submitted by June 1.
