John Carroll, director of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's School of Natural Resources, has been selected as president-elect of the National Association of University Fish and Wildlife Programs. His term as president-elect began Jan. 1, and he will serve as the organization's president in 2023.
Established, in 1991, the National Association of University Fish and Wildlife Programs aims to represent, strengthen, and advocate for all college and university programs educating fish and wildlife conservation and management professionals. The association has 40 members from more than 30 states who represent 9,000 students and 400 faculty across the United States. It is the only academic association representing the field of fish and wildlife conservation and management.
“John has done a tremendous job as the director of the School of Natural Resources, and it’s a wonderful honor for him to serve as president for the National Association of University Fish and Wildlife Programs,” said Tiffany Heng-Moss, dean of UNL’s College of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources.
Carroll has served as the SNR director and professor of wildlife ecology since 2013. During his time as director, SNR has launched new majors in community and regional forestry and in environmental science. The school has also continued to grow a fisheries and wildlife degree program that has tripled in size to nearly 300 students since 2004.
Carroll’s research interests include wildlife ecology and engagement, agroecosystem, and ornithology, among others. He has worked with numerous developing countries on wildlife management and has led nearly 20 student groups to Africa to study wildlife and wildlife management there. Prior to his appointment as president for the association, he served as central region chair.
