SNR welcomes Dr. David Anderson for a special seminar on Wednesday, March 27th at 2 p.m. in the Hardin Hall Auditorium. Anderson, an emeritus professor in the department of fishery and wildlife biology at Colorado State University, will speak on statistical thought, especially in ecology.

Anderson’s seminar will cover a breadth of philosophical questions regarding the use of statistics in empirical science. Examining the strengths and weaknesses of various approaches, Anderson ultimately makes recommendations for more successful approaches to model selection. As Anderson explains, “20th century analysis theory attempted to ‘find the best model and make inference from it.’ 21st century science is about finding the model weights (probabilities) and using the information in all the models in making robust statistical inferences with estimates of precision that include model selection uncertainty.” His seminar will offer approaches to follow the 21st century’s pursuits.

Dr. Anderson’s particular expertise includes population dynamics, distance sampling and analysis theory and applications, survival experiments, analysis and inference methods, and information theoretic methods in the analysis of empirical data.
