The University of Nebraska has updated its policy on university-sponsored travel to countries under a U.S. Department of State Travel Warning or Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Travel Health Notice.

Under the revised policy, any faculty or staff member seeking to travel for university purposes to a country for which the CDC has issued a Travel Health Notice at Warning Level 3 must first obtain approval by making a written request to his or her chancellor. The chancellor will then make a recommendation on the request to the president, who will make a final decision.

CDC Warning Level 3 notices are currently in effect for Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Employees participating in non-university-sponsored travel to a CDC Warning Level 3 country must report their travel to the chief academic officer on their campus prior to departure.

All employees who travel to CDC Warning Level 3 countries, whether for university purposes or not, will be subject to appropriate screening and health monitoring before they can return to their campus in order to ensure the health and safety of the entire University of Nebraska community.

Longstanding university policy has prohibited students from traveling to CDC Warning Level 3 countries.

NU’s full policy on university-sponsored travel is contained within Executive Memorandum 25, available on the university’s website here.

UNL also has issued a message to campus discussing its approach to the Ebola situation in West Africa and the recent domestic cases. Read the message at http://go.unl.edu/6yrd.
