The Codell aquifer in northeast Nebraska’s Boyd and Knox counties is a small aquifer with only about 70 registered wells in it, yet the impact is has on the region is an important one.
The latest bulletin “Aquifers of Nebraska I: The Codell Aquifer in the Northeastern Nebraska,” released by the Conservation and Survey Division at the School of Natural Resources, examines the aquifer and presents the results from the first comprehensive study ever conducted on it in Nebraska.
It is the first bulletin written by Dana Divine, Matt Joeckel and Susan Olafsen Lacky in a series that will examine the state’s aquifers. It is available for $10 at the Nebraska Maps and More Store in the first floor of Hardin Hall, 3310 Holdrege St., Lincoln, or online at the UNL Marketplace at go.unl.edu/codellaquifer or amazon.com. Phone orders also are accepted at (402) 472-3471.
Included in the publication are sections documenting the geology of the Codell Sandstone and the hydrogeology of the aquifer, as well as recommendations for gathering data on the aquifer in the future.
The Conservation and Survey Division of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is the agency designated by statute to investigate and interpret the geologically related natural resources of the state, to make available to the public the results of their investigations, and to assist in the development and conservation of these resources. It consists of program areas in geology, water and soils.
