Yes, the semester just started. But here in SNR, we’ve already got Puerto Rico, Namibia, Botswana and Sicily on the mind.
CASNR and UNL Education Abroad are offering at least four study abroad trips led by SNR faculty in 2017. Informational sessions planned for this week for Puerto Rico and Namibia in SNR will give students plenty of options to ask questions; but students missing the sessions – or curious about Botswana or Sicily study abroad options – should attend the Study Abroad Fair set for 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 20, in City Union.
Puerto Rico
The informational session for Tropical Island Ecosystems and Ecology (NRES 492) is noon Thursday, Sept. 15, in 207 Hardin Hall. The course, which is open to all UNL students, includes a trip to Puerto Rico during spring break. Pizza will be provided at the informational session.
Students will have the opportunity to experience the rain and dry forests, snorkel on a tropical reef and bioluminescent bay and explore the tropical rivers, underground caves and beaches of Puerto Rico. They will also visit research stations and interact with locals while observing the components of tropical ecosystems on a major island system.
Interested students are encouraged to attend the informational session. However, an application can be obtained by contacting Dennis Ferraro, professor of practice, at dferraro1@unl.edu or 415 Hardin Hall. Applications are due Nov. 18.
Namibia
The information session for the study tour trip to Namibia in May 2017 is 5 to 6 p.m. Monday, Sept. 19, in Hardin Hall 163. The class co-led by Dr. Larkin Powell, professor of conservation biology and animal ecology, and Kelly Powell, is open to students of any level at UNL.
The course includes investigations of the effects of economy, geography, ecology, culture and history on conservation needs and conservation practices in a southern Africa country known for its wildlife populations. Students will visit a broad range of groups practicing conservation in unique ways, and they’ll camp under the bright stars in a desert, savannas and shrublands.
Included in the trip are visits to Etosha National Park, Cheetah Conservation Fund, and the NamibRand Nature Reserve, among other destinations. And, students will visit a preschool, an environmental education center, a Himba village, a soup kitchen, a taxidermy shop, and craft centers for exposure to the needs, opinions and culture of the local people.
The class automatically fulfills the ACE 9 requirement.

Botswana
Information about the study tour trip to Botswana will be available at the fair. SNR Director John Carroll, who leads the class, will have a booth there. The course is targeted at upper level students with majors in field sciences such as wildlife, ecology, biology and animal science.
Wildlife Conservation in Mashatu Game Reserve, set for May 14 to June 13, will bring students into the wild of southern Africa, where they will spend a month camping in the bush and leaving about the natural history of bush ecosystems and wildlife conservation. Students will experience phenomenal wildlife and face challenges they never imagined. Students also will assist on research projects on large predators and birds.
Mashatu represents the diversity of modern conservation issues in Africa, with more than 2,000 elephants in conflict with local villages and agriculture.

Sicily
Information about the mummy studies trip to Italy in summer 2017 will be available at the fair.
The course, led by Dr. Karl Reinhard, takes students to Sicily for two weeks, where they will study mummies – and more specifically religious mummies – while staying in a renovated convent, Convento dei Cappuccini e l’annessa Chiesa in the village of Santa Lucia del Melo.
Students will visit crypts and catacombs in Palermo and the village of Piraino also located on the main island of Sicily. Students will participate in visual assessment of mummy preservation at these three locations.

The College of Arts and Sciences has other trips with an emphasis on agriculture, horticulture and natural resources planned for the spring and summer 2017. Get more information on those courses here.
The university also offers a variety of courses through its college and through partnerships with other institutions. Find out more here.
