In celebration of Nebraska International Migratory Bird Month, Morrill Hall's Sunday with a Scientist program will focus on birds, migration and bird-watching. The program for children and families is 1:30 to 4:30 p.m. May 21.
Started in 1993, International Migratory Bird Day is celebrated annually as a chance for conservationists, natural resource agencies, families and individuals to celebrate birds and bird migration. University of Nebraska-Lincoln biologists and graduate students will lead activities for museum visitors.
Children and families will meet scientists and learn more about research on various bird species. Activities include a station on bird-watching with a display of terns, plovers and prairie chickens, and a station to better understand wing shapes and sizes. Visitors can test their knowledge by listening to bird songs to try to identify what species the songs belong to, and visitors will learn what to do when encountering a baby bird displaced from its nest.
Sunday with a Scientist is a presentation series that highlights the work of scientists, while educating children and families on a variety of topics related to science and natural history. Presenters share scientific information in a fun, informal way through demonstrations, activities or by conducting science on site. The presentations typically take place from 1:30 to 4:30 p.m on the third Sunday of each month.
