City Impact used the $5,000 grant to help struggling readers in three urban elementary schools. It supported onsite reading coordinators in these schools to train and equip volunteers who worked one-on-one, or in small groups with students. This translated to 105/118 (89%) of the tested K-2 Grade students seeing growth in literacy scores.
This support is truly making an impact! At the end of the semester, Mrs. Delka, an ELL teacher at Elliott Elementary said, “I informally tested [3 brand new students] last week...and we were up from about 0 to 15 sounds for each [student]. I really think the work they are doing with City Impact is a reason why. So, please tell your donors thanks in advance and this program is really important to Elliott and the city of Lincoln!”
