In conjunction with the UNL Eating Disorders Education and Prevention group, Girls on the Run of Nebraska will host a large 5K event on East Campus May 12.
More than 1,300 runners/walkers (the majority of whom are children) will take to the East Campus Loop as part of the statewide Girls on the Run 5K. More than 1,300 spectators will attend, as well.
The 5K begins at 1 p.m. and runners are expected to finish by about 2 p.m. To ensure the safety of the participants, the East Campus Loop will be closed to vehicle traffic from about 12:50 to 2:05 p.m. that day.
Faculty, staff and students who plan to be on campus that day should be aware of this event and street closure and plan accordingly:
• Building access won’t be affected, but campus patrons won’t be able to drive on campus while the run is in progress (12:50 to 2:05 p.m.)
• The majority of participants and their families will arrive on campus between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Inbound traffic will be heavy.
• Parking attendants from UNL Parking and Transit Services will be on campus from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. to direct parking and inform campus visitors about the event.
• Campus police officers/CSOs will be stationed at the three Holdrege entrances and the 33rd Street entrance from 12:15 to 2:15 to direct traffic and provide security.
• 5K participants will be directed to park in the three commuter lots on the southeast corner of the East Campus Loop.
• The East Union has been rented and will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day.
• The Dairy Store will maintain its regular schedule and open at noon.
• Participants will begin leaving campus at 2:10 p.m. Outgoing traffic will be heavy.
To access the May 12 Nebraska Statewide Arboretum plant sale, use the Leighton Street entrance to East Campus.
