The Wick Alumni Center is displaying the Missouri-Nebraska Bell and the Corn Bowl Trophy with Iowa. The Missouri-Nebraska Bell was exchanged for more than 80 years and the Corn Bowl was started in 2011. Both trophies reside side by side in the Wick Alumni Center for public viewing.
The Missouri-Nebraska Bell was exchanged for over 80 years between UNL's Innocents Society and Missouri's QEBH Society. The bell was originally taken from a church in Seward, Neb. in 1892 by UNL fraternities Delta Tau Delta and Phi Delta Theta; it was used as an
award for competitive events. Eventually, it was suggested a trophy be used for the Missouri-Nebraska game and thus the the Bell became the official trophy of the football game between Nebraska and Missouri in 1927.
Over the years the trophy was presented during half-time
with the winning school keeping the trophy for the next year.
With Nebraska's 31-17 win over Missouri in 2010 the bell remains the property of the Innocents Society at the University of Nebraska.
The Corn Bowl is a new trophy exchange started with the University of Iowa in 2011. A Penny War competition that coincides with the game is organized by UNL's Innocents Society and Iowa's President's Leadership Class, with proceeds going to an agreed upon Charity. Last Year, with Nebraska's 20-7 win in the football game and the Student Body of UNL raising more money than Iowa's Student Body, the trophy resides on campus right next to the Missouri-Nebraska Bell. The competition to
retain the trophy will continue this fall.
The public is welcome to visit these two trophies in the Wick Alumni Center at 1520 R St. These two trophies embody the state of the university: The Bell full of proud tradition and history, the Corn Bowl new and yearning for its great story to be written.
