The 22nd season of Jazz in June continues today (June 18) with Angela Hagenbach performing in the Sheldon Museum of Art sculpture garden. The free concert series takes place every Tuesday in June at 7 p.m., with activities beginning as early as 5 p.m.
Concertgoers are encouraged to arrive early to get a spot on the lawn west of the museum. Blankets and lawn chairs are allowed. Pets, with the exception of service animals, are not.
The event also includes the Jazz in June Market at 12th and R streets, opening at 5 p.m. The market features vendors selling food and drink and wares by local artists.
Walking tours of campus gardens, organized by UNL Landscape Services, Facilities Management and Planning, and Sheldon, are offered at 6 p.m. each night beginning at the east entrance of the museum. The June 18 tour features UNL's Cather and Donaldson gardens. Eileen Bergt, assistant director of landscape services, will lead the tour of the gardens.
Hagenbach's voice shifts easily between musical genres, excelling in her interpretations of jazz standards and Latin jazz. She has toured Switzerland with Clark Terry and worked and recorded with Jimmy Heath, Russell Malone, Frank Foster's Big Band, Tamir Hendelman and others. She has graced the stages of numerous festivals, concert halls and performance venues around the world. She was twice chosen by the U.S. State Department to represent the United States as a cultural jazz ambassador during the Clinton administration. Both world tours kicked off at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts and progressed through 17 countries.
Widely known as a masterful interpreter of other composer's works, Hagenbach is also an accomplished songwriter. Two of her compositions are featured in the film "Last Will," for which she was also cast as a wedding singer. She works as a print model and voice artist, performing commercials and jingles for radio and television, in addition to regular club date appearances.
Hagenbach's band includes Danny Embrey, Roger Wilder, Zack Beeson, Gary Helm and Doug Auwarter.
