1. Take notes in class
Pay attention in class and take notes! Paying attention in class will save you from having to teach yourself the material later.
2. Review notes
Use the notes from class to refresh your memory on the topics you learned.
Look for any important formulas or equations that could help you.
3. Look at example problems
Instead of just looking for the answer, try to follow along with any example problems that are worked out (you can probably find some in your notes or in your textbook!) Try to follow the work and see how the answer was obtained.
Once you think you have figured out how to solve the problem and understand the steps, try going back and solving example problems yourself. This can be helpful since the steps and answers are provided. If you make a mistake you can see exactly where you made it!
4. Practice!
Math is a skill and just like any other skill, practice makes progress. The more you practice, the better you will get at seeing the process behind the problems.
Homework can be tedious but there’s a reason it’s there. Homework problems are a great way to practice what you learned.
5. Ask for help
Your teachers are there to help you. If you are having trouble with a concept ask them for help, teachers usually have time after school to work with students!
One of your friends or classmates may be able to help you, it would be worth reaching out to them to see if they understand the material.
