Employers are participating in virtual career fairs, offering virtual Employer in Residence, and hosting virtual events. Employers are eager to learn about you and, honestly, aren’t having as many people attend their programs. So you have an opportunity to stand out and gain a meaningful connection by participating in virtual events.
But what do you say and do in these situations? Here’s a few ideas:
Approach this as a casual learning opportunity. Start with a little bit about you and why you chose to interact with this employer. “Hi, I’m a junior in marketing and starting to think about summer internships. I saw that you were having Employer in Residence hours and thought this was a good opportunity to learn more from you. Can you tell me about how your organization approaches marketing?”
Ask for specific advice on career questions. “I’m considering either the Law & Business minor or the Business Analytics minor. Which one do you think would be more valuable in your organization?”
Make a professional connection. “I recently applied for your accounting internship. I just wanted to personally introduce myself and let you know how eager I am to get experience in an accounting firm.”
That gets you started, now how do you continue the conversation?
Share information about what you have done or are currently doing related to your career goals? “Last year, I was just getting involved in the Big Red Investment Club. Although meetings are different this year, I’m excited to participate in-person or virtually with the speakers. For example, last week I learned more about technical analysis in investment management. That makes me even more excited for my future finance classes.”
Ask questions of the employer. “As people increased their online ordering, how has that affected your supply chain processes? Do you think those processes will change again when people can return to in-person work?”
Inquire about specific opportunities or next steps. “Do you anticipate having a human resources internship in the future? How would I best learn about positions?”
Exchange contact information. “This has been really helpful. Would you share your email address so I can send other questions to you and send you my resume? Or would you prefer to connect on LinkedIn?
