Value of a Practice Interview
A good resume may get you an interview, but a good interview can help you land a job or internship. Often people are nervous about having an interview, but your Business Career Center team is here to help you by offering practice interviews.
A practice interview gives you a low-stress environment to prepare for the real thing!
Here’s some of the reasons why a practice interview may be helpful:
• Gain confidence in telling personal/professional stories. We aren’t normally used to talking about ourselves so a practice interview can help you think of examples of times when you used your strengths or skills and share that effectively.
• Practice responding to typical questions and prepare for unanticipated questions. Career coaches regularly talk to employers and are aware of typical interview questions. But if there are questions you are more concerned about being asked, the career coach can help you prepare to answer those as well. This is also a chance to consider what questions you may want to ask your prospective employer.
• Increase public speaking skills. Answering questions aloud helps you figure out if you use filler words, speak too long or short, or need to be more direct in your responses.
• Practice listening skills. An interview is a two-way street where you are both responding to an employer but also listening to their questions and comments. A practice interview may alert you to tendencies to interrupt the interviewer or give answers that do not relate to the question.
• Receive constructive feedback. Career coaches will provide feedback on your responses, body language, eye contact, and more.
Practice interviews can be scheduled via the Student Success Hub and conducted in person, over the phone, or via Zoom.
