The University of Nebraska–Lincoln offers innovative courses in the spring 2025 pre-session, which runs from Jan. 2 to 17. PLAS 496/AGRO 896 Hands-on Marker Assisted Selection in a Breeding Program is an introductory course that will help students gain a hands-on understanding of molecular processes of marker-assisted selection within a breeding program. Students will assume the role of an associate breeder, conversion breeder or trait integration breeder within the context of a major seed company. Students will work hands-on in a lab setting to perform the molecular work of a MAS project.

This course is for undergraduate and graduate students who may be interested in pursuing a career in the seed industry, working in a breeding operation, or gaining experience with marker-assisted selection projects. The course focuses on the practical aspects of molecular crop improvement and reinforces concepts and principles acquired in PLAS-215 through hands-on and experiential learning. It is for students who are interested in developing the skills necessary to plan, coordinate and execute marker-assisted selection projects for fast and enhanced product development and gaining hands-on laboratory experience in the practical aspects of using molecular tools, techniques and analysis of nucleic acids and molecular markers.

This is a one-credit course taught by Luis Posadas Martinez, a research assistant professor in agronomy and horticulture.
