Environmental and Water Resources Engineering Seminar Series- March 11th

Nothing is simple. Everything is interconnected. Infrastructure
systems are not only interdependent, but the way people consume the services provided by infrastructure is also interrelated. When we are out on the roads, we do not consume electricity and when we are home consuming electricity, we are not generating traffic on roads. Understanding these interrelationships is important toward our societal goal to become more sustainable and resilient. In this seminar, I will first introduce urban engineering as a discipline that studies and designs urban infrastructure as integrated and codependent systems. I will also discuss how each infrastructure system will have to change. The field is by nature interdisciplinary, including elements of urban planning, urban metabolism, computer science, and civil, electrical, and mechanical engineering. Moreover, urban engineering leverages recent advances in data science, and I will discuss how machine learning can help capture and understand interrelationships between infrastructure systems with a focus on transport, water, and electricity and gas consumption.
