Position Summary: Do you like getting outside and experiencing the natural environment and wooded areas of Nebraska? Then come join the team that is working to protect, restore and enhance Nebraska’s forest resources! The Nebraska Forest Service (NFS) has several full-time, seasonal Student Forestry Technicians open for summer 2022. Technicians will assist the NFS’s management of two forestry properties: Prairie Pines near Lincoln, NE and Horning State Farm Demonstration Forest near Plattsmouth, NE. Work involves various aspects of forestry, horticulture and natural resource management in a forest setting. Individuals will report daily to Forestry Hall on East Campus and travel to one of the two NFS properties.

Benefits: Students will receive professional experience and exposure to the diverse field of forestry and its practices. Throughout their tenure, they will gain marketable skills that can be leveraged to obtain natural resources employment following graduation. The student will also work alongside NFS forestry professionals, furthering their knowledge of conservation and resource issues.

Schedule and Wage: 40 hours a week from May 16 – August 19, 2022. Compensation is $10.00/hour.

Summary of Duties:

· Maintaining hazelnut, pecan, chestnut, walnut plots and forest demonstration sites.

· Growing and maintaining research plant material.

· Planting and caring for trees.

· Installing and maintaining animal protection devices.

· Controlling invasive plant species.

· General grounds and building maintenance.

Minimum Qualifications:

· Currently enrolled in classes at UNL.

· Ability to work outside in all weather conditions.

· Desire to learn forestry practices such as species identification, pruning, and operation of hand or power tools.

· Current valid driver’s license and eligibility to meet UNL driving standards required.

Preferred Qualifications:

· Farm or machinery experience.

· Pesticide application experience.

· Previous work, volunteer or internship experience in the natural resources field.

· Experience with taxonomic classification or species identification.

· Self-starter and ability to interact with various NFS stakeholders and members of the public.

· Knowledge of natural resources issues pertaining to Nebraska.
