Job Description:
If you're an engineering student with a passion for bridge engineering and looking to take your understanding of this field to the next level, the Nebraska Department of Transportation's Bridge Division is the perfect place for you. With ownership of more than 3,500 state-owned bridges and data management responsibility for all 15,000 bridges in the state, we have extensive experience and expertise in the field of bridge engineering. Job Duties:
As a bridge engineering intern at the Nebraska Department of Transportation Bridge Division, you will have the opportunity to gain experience and develop skills in a variety of areas. This will include learning how to read bridge construction plans effectively and quickly, as well as developing plan and model drafting skills. You may also gain an understanding of how to calculate loads acting on bridges and become familiar with specialized bridge design and management software. Additionally, you will have the opportunity to collaborate with experts in structural, hydrology and hydraulics, geotechnical, roadway, materials, construction, and environmental engineering, as an active member of multi-disciplinary teams. Other potential duties may include calculating bridge capacity for non-legal truck loads, gaining knowledge of hydrology and hydraulic calculations necessary to size hydraulic structures, providing support to bridge inspection teams, and learning about how bridges are constructed through in-the-field opportunities. These experiences offer a unique opportunity to develop a broad range of skills and knowledge that can help you advance your career in the field of bridge engineering.

REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a three-fourths time student in good standing majoring in a discipline or field related to the work to be assigned. Must be eligible to work in the United States.

PREFERRED:
Civil Engineering student with relevant coursework. Master's student preferred. Ability to work 10 - 16 hours per week.

OTHER:
Employment may be possible for up to 4 years with proof of enrollment in an accredited college. Class schedules must be submitted at the beginning of employment to verify enrollment and transcripts of grades. Temporary, full-time work may be available during breaks. Permanent employment is possible through the open competitive process. Must be able to work at least 10 hours per week (or more to be determined by the employing agency based on the applicants' class schedules) when classes are in session.
