Abstract:
Writing a Research Need Statement or a Research Proposal – Back to the Basics' invites student researchers to rediscover the foundational principles of effective proposal writing. This presentation delineates the essential distinctions and synergies between the Statement of Needs and the Research Proposal, guiding attendees through the core elements and common pitfalls of each. Emphasizing simplicity, clarity, and directness, we will explore practical strategies to craft documents that resonate with reviewers and funding bodies. The presentation will focus on what truly matters in communicating research intentions and potential impacts. The presentation will wrap up with a Q&A session, inviting participants to clarify doubts and enrich their understanding of effective proposal and research statement writing.

Bio:
Dr. Jiong Hu is a Professor and the Associate Chair for Graduate Programs of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He received his BSc in Construction Materials in 1996 and MSc in Materials in 1999 from Southeast University, China, and his PhD in Geotechnical and Materials Engineering from Iowa State University in 2005. Dr. Hu is an experienced and energetic researcher and educator. He has over twenty years of experience in the professional practice of transportation and built environmental materials field, particularly in the concrete materials area. Dr. Hu has served as a principal investigator (PI) or Co‐PI for over forty research projects, with a total amount of over seven million dollars funded. He has published over fifty peer‐reviewed papers and technical reports. Dr. Hu is an active member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), and the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He served as president of the ACI Nebraska Chapter, chairman of ACI Committee 238 (Workability of Fresh Concrete), and secretary of ACI Committee 555 (Concrete with Recycled Materials). His research interests include ultra- high performance concrete (UHPC) and fiber-reinforced concrete (FRC), concrete with recycled materials, agricultural and forestry wastes, fresh concrete properties and rheology of concrete, multi-state and multi-scale material characterization, concrete pavement and pavement materials, 3D printing materials and control, cellular concrete, bioinspired cement- based material, and critical thinking in undergraduate and graduate education. Dr. Jiong Hu serves as a Teaching Fellow within the College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
