Saurav Karki: Drift Dynamics of Early Life-Stage Invasive Carps in Shallow Rivers with Two-Dimensional Hydrodynamics

Abstract: Understanding early life-stage transport of invasive carp eggs is key to developing effective population control strategies; however, existing 1D models are limited to single-channel river systems and fall short in applicability to shallow, braided systems like the Platte River. To address this, we integrate high-resolution, depth-averaged 2D velocity fields from HEC-RAS with an advection-diffusion model to simulate 3D Lagrangian egg trajectories. The resulting probabilistic maps of egg transport pathways, concentrations, and deposition zones will improve predictions and support targeted management efforts in complex braided riverine systems.

Olivier Irumva: Release of Nano and Microplastics from Disposable coffee Cups: Characterization, Risk Assessment, and Health Impacts

Abstract: Although often perceived as eco-friendly, disposable coffee cups may release nano- and microplastics (NMPs) into beverages. These cups are typically lined with a thin plastic coating to prevent leakage; however, this lining can degrade under certain conditions, leading to the release of NMPs. When ingested, these tiny plastic particles may pose potential health risks. My study investigates the factors that influence NMP release and evaluates their potential toxicity. Understanding these effects is crucial for improving consumer safety and informing the development of safer, more sustainable alternatives.
