When: Monday/Wednesday, 1:30pm-2:45pm
Where: KH A512, PKI (TBD)

Course Description: This course focuses on the main components of flexible pavement surface materials, their chemical, physical and mechanical characteristics. It is the intent of this course to outline the differences between the main asphalt binders and aggregates used in the fabrication of asphalt mixtures. Students completing should demonstrate the ability to analyze the results of Superpave binder Performance Graded specification tests, to perform Superpave volumetric mixture design, to analyze and understand strengths and weaknesses of various asphalt concrete performance test methods and their importance in the mechanical behavior of flexible pavement performance.

Selected Topics to Cover:
• Introduction to pavements / pavement distress
• Asphalt chemistry
• Traditional and Superpave Performance Grading (PG) system
• Aggregate specification
• Traditional asphalt mixture design methods
• Superpave volumetric mix design
• Balance Mix Design
• Performance test methods and models

Special Activities:
• Laboratory demonstration of Superpave binder Performance Graded specification tests;
• Hands on activity: students will prepare different asphalt concrete samples using unconventional and sustainable materials (residues/by-products) and selected performance test to evaluate cracking and/or rutting potential.
