This Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) leverages watersheds in the Finger Lakes Region and analytical resources at the City College of New York to offer undergraduates early in their STEM career a mentored experience of research in integrated environmental science.

Participants will work in teams with dedicated faculty mentors to design a research program to address hypotheses surrounding environmental microplastic contamination. Participants can focus on sources, transport or fate of environmental microplastic, and consider the impacts of microplastic on ecosystems. In addition to research, students will participate in career-building workshops and have the opportunity to present their research at a professional conference during the following academic year. Participants will be based at Hobart and William Smith for field work and initial sample preparation, then travel to New York City to complete laboratory analyses and interpretation of results at The City College of New York.

Eligibility Requirements:
• Undergraduate studying science or engineering with interest in environmental
science. First-year or sophomore preferred.
• U.S. citizen or permanent resident.

DEADLINE:
Completed application materials for Environmental Microplastic REU undergraduate positions must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. EST on Monday, January 26, 2026. Applicants will be notified of decisions by February 17, 2026.
