CRPL 472/872: Hazard Mitigation Planning
Semester: Fall, 2019 (Monday 6:00-8:40pm)
Instructors: Dr. Zhenghong Tang; and Jeff Henson

In March 2019, Nebraska was affected by a historical
flood disaster. Flooding in Nebraska has been presidentially declared as a
major natural disaster 20 times since 2000. More extreme hazards (e.g. flood)
could happen in our communities. How can we prepare our communities to be
more resilient against future hazards?

Hazard mitigation planning is an important step in achieving the goal of
community resilience. Planning ahead for disasters can help reduce community
vulnerabilities and increase resiliency in the disaster management cycle:
mitigation, preparation, response, and recovery.

This class will open a new career path for students to explore in the emergency
management and hazard mitigation planning field. Guest speakers from local,
state, and federal agencies will be invited to participate in discussions with the
class. Field trips, out-of-classroom training, and community-based
service learning projects will be conducted in this class.
