Campus parking system moves to virtual permits

Parking and Transit Services is implementing a virtual permit system for the Lincoln campus. With the new License Plate Recognition, vehicle license plates serve as permit identification.

To be included in the parking permit system, students must register their vehicles online and pay appropriate fees. The vehicle is then eligible to park in designated campus areas.

For example, you can select an Area C permit, register the license plate information for the vehicle and park in designated Area C lots across campus.

Costs for the new permits are unchanged.

With the License Plate Recognition system, parking areas are monitored by Parking and Transit Services staff. License plates are verified with the system database. Any vehicle that is not appropriately registered for that area can receive a citation.

The need for most window permit stickers will be eliminated. Window stickers will be required for permits in Resident Student Housing areas. Garage parking permits will require hang tags with the radio frequency identification that opens the garage gate arms. All vehicles will be monitored with License Plate Recognition.

This system is already successfully in operation at the University of Nebraska - Omaha campus.

The new Lincoln License Plate Recognition system will take effect July 1. Steps for online vehicle registration and permit purchase will be distributed in the coming weeks.
