A Closer Look: New lights for 17th and R Garage provide energy, cost savings

“The new lights will use 50 percent less energy to produce a similar level of light,” said Dan Carpenter, Director, Parking and Transit Services. “They are significantly less expensive over time. Each unit will operate for about 100,000 hours. There are 8,760 hours in a year. So the new lights will last 11 years – until 2027.”

Installation will begin on the top floors of the 17th and R Garage in early June and should be completed by the end of July. Areas will be temporarily closed to parking as the installation progresses.

The 17th and R Garage is the fourth on the downtown UNL campus to install energy efficient lighting. Stadium Garage uses 100 watt lights, and other garages use 200 watt lights, so its operating costs are less with current fixtures.

“We are pleased to move forward with this project,” Carpenter said. “We are using fewer resources and spending less operating money to maintain our lighting levels. This is a good step for all of us.”
