Mid-Semester Check Continues
UNL's eighth-annual Mid-Semester Check for first-year and entering transfer students is Sept. 19 to 22. The program highlights and reminds students of academic expectations while providing information on advising resources.
Mid-Semester check is offered in two sessions, 6 to 7:30 p.m. and 7 to 8:30 p.m., each night in the Nebraska Union. Read more about Mid Semester Check on Today@UNL
UNL joins GigU to bring faster internet for university communities
UNL recently joined GigU, the University Community Next Generation Innovation Project.

GigU is a nationwide group of universities and research institutions working to accelerate the deployment of ultra-high-speed connectivity to the nation's leading research universities and their surrounding communities. GigU has released a request for information. The RFI process, according to GigU, will work "with current and potential network service providers, as well as others, to create a critical mass of next generation test beds by accelerating the offering of ultra high-speed network services to their communities." BEADLE CENTER ROOM N172, 4PMXiang to lead biocehmistry research seminar
The Department of Biochemistry hosts a lecture by Shi-Hua Xiang at 4 p.m., today in the Beadle Center, room N172. The lecture, "HIV-1 Envelope Structure-Based Vaccine Design," is free and open to the public.
Xiang is a research associate professor in the School of Biological Sciences. He won the university's first Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Grand Challenges Explorations grant. Read more about the lecture on Today@UNL

Gerard Magliocca
Indiana scholar to discuss William Jennings Bryan
Although William Jennings Bryan lost the presidential elections of 1896, 1900, and 1908, he was the most influential political figure of his era. Gerard Magliocca, a professor from Indiana University School of Law, will discuss his book, "The Tragedy of William Jennings Bryan," at noon, Sept. 20 in the College of Law's Hamann Auditorium.
Magliocca's book explores how Bryan's effort to reach the White House energized conservatives across the nation and transformed constitutional law. In reaction to the Populist agenda, the Supreme Court established a host of new constitutional principles during the 1890s. Read more about this discussion on Today@UNL

Pearl Jam documentary screens one night only at the Ross
Cameron Crowe's "Pearl Jam Twenty" is showing for one night only at the Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center. The documentary — part concert film, part intimate insider-hang, part testimonial to the power of music and uncompromising artists — shows at 7 p.m., Sept. 20.
Crowe's film traces the career of the popular band Pearl Jam. Told in big themes and bold colors, "Pearl Jam Twenty" is cut from 1,200 hours or rarely- and never-before-seen footage. Read more about the documentary on Today@UNL
