The seventh annual Nebraska African American Domestic Violence Action Committee Conference is 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Feb. 13 in the East Union. The conference is free and open to faculty, staff and students. Registration is required.
The conference theme is "Fathers Matter: Domestic Violence in the African American/Black Community." The plenary speaker is Johnnie Rice II, a senior program associate with the Vera Institute for Justice.
Rice has worked to address family violence, serving in a variety of roles for nationally recognized domestic-violence entities, including contributing to the development of the Safe Havens Supervised Visitation Grant Program Guiding Principles. Rice has a long history of working with low-income fathers and families, focusing on responsible fatherhood and on enhancing their stability and the safety of the communities they live in. He has provided oversight for statewide domestic violence efforts through the Victims of Crime Assistance Program, the Domestic Violence Program, and Rape Crisis and Sexual Assault Program.
Additional sessions include "Cyber Stalking In Teen Dating Violence," "Faith Leaders Working to 'Stop The Violence,'" "Children Witnessing Violence: Implications for the African/African American Community," and "Men @ Nebraska: College Men Empowering Their Peers to Lead Successful Lives."
Continuing education credits are available at no charge for social workers and counselors who attend the conference.
