International Expert on Climate Change Speaks at UNL

Global warming, one of the defining issues of our day, is the focus of the University Libraries 2008 Visiting Scholar Program during a two-day event at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln April 16 and 17. David Easterling, an internationally recognized expert on climate change, will participate in two events designed to shed light on this complex and divisive topic.

Easterling will present the lecture "Evidence of Climate Change," at 2 p.m. today in the Nebraska Union, 1400 R St. (room posted). Easterling, a researcher and Chief of Scientific Services at the National Climatic Data Center, was a lead author for "Climate Change 2007," the Fourth Assessment Report of the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which shared with Al Gore the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. more...

 

John Trudell

College of Arts & Sciences Holds Appreciation Days

Acclaimed Native American activist, writer, actor & recording artist John Trudell will speak in several events today. At 3 p.m. in the Nebraska Union, he'll present a lecture titled, "Intelligence as Alternative Energy." This event will be followed by a book signing ("Lines From a Mined Mind") at 4 p.m. and a talk titled, "Give Love, Give Life: National Health Care for Women & Children" at 7 p.m. in the Crib in the Nebraska Union.

Trudell's visit is sponsored by the Institute for Ethnic Studies & Native American Studies and co-sponsored by the Anthropology & Geography Department, Career Opportunities in Research (COR), the English Department, Great Plains Studies, OASIS, and the Political Science Department.



Death, Murder, and Mayhem

UNL to Present Symposium on Murder and Violence April 16-19

Co-sponsored by the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the 34th Interdisciplinary Great Plains Studies Symposium, will take place April 16-19 at Embassy Suites, 555 S. 10th St., Omaha in the Old Market area. "Death, Murder, and Mayhem: Stories of Violence and Healing on the Plains" is the theme of this years symposium.

The conference will open tonight with a reception and keynote talk by Diane Dufva Quantic, emeritus professor at Wichita State University. Quantic will speak on "The Deep Roots of Violence on the Great Plains." She is the author of "The Nature of the Place" and co-author of "The Great Plains Reader." Quantic's talk starts at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. more...

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and Snow Angels. Both films will show through April 24.

On the heels of Cristi Puiu's brilliant The Death of Mr. Lazarescu comes another outstanding picture, 4 Months, 3 Week, and 2 Days, which firmly establishes Romania as a major force in early 21st-century world cinema. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, Cristian Mungiu's excruciatingly intense drama is set in Bucharest in the mid-1980s, as Nicolae Ceaucescu and his evil dictatorship continue to reign. In a country where abortion is outlawed, a young college student, Gabita (Laura Vasiliu), finds herself in big trouble. Unsure what to do, she turns to her roommate, Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), for help. The pair connects with a black market doctor Bebe (Vlad Ivanov), in order to take care of Gabita's pregnancy--but, of course, it isn't that simple. The resulting 24 hours reveals a harrowing descent into a world in which the possibility of tragedy lurks around every corner.

Snow Angels, adapted from the novel of the same title by Stewart O'Nan, is two stories of love and loss converging. One is of a recently separated couple attempting to pick up the threads of a future when faced with tragedy. The second is about an awkward young man, currently in the throes of discovering his first romance, forced to deal with the separation and subsequent strife of his parents' relationship. Snow Angels is written and directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker David Gordon Green.
