Veneciano selected as new Sheldon Museum of Art director
Jorge Daniel Veneciano will become director of Sheldon Museum of Art on July 1, University of Nebraska-Lincoln Chancellor Harvey Perlman announced today.
For the past three years, Veneciano has been director of Paul Robeson Galleries at the Rutgers University campus in Newark, N.J. He has 10 years arts administration and fund-raising experience, including five years as exhibitions curator at The Studio Museum in Harlem in the 1990s. Before moving to New York in 1994, he directed three community arts centers for the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. University Theatre Presents The Unvarnished Truth
UNL's Johnny Carson School of Theatre and Film's University Theatre presents The Unvarnished Truth by Royce Ryton. A black comedy in the true British style, the production features a procession of screwball characters and a pile of tangled events that leaves everyone grasping for straws and trying to cover their tracks.
Performances will be held April 24 - 26, 2008 at 7:30 p.m. in Howell Theatre, first floor Temple Building. Tickets are $16 regular, $14 faculty/staff and senior citizen, $10 student with ID. Forsberg's 'On Ancient Wings' Exhibit Celebrates Sandhill Cranes
An exhibit of photographs by Lincoln photographer Michael Forsberg at the University of Nebraska State Museum coincides with the sandhill cranes' arrival in Nebraska. Through 44 stunning color photographs, "On Ancient Wings," on exhibit through Aug. 14 in the museum's third-floor Cooper Gallery, intertwines the lives of cranes, people and their common places.
Forsberg engaged in an extraordinary five-year, 65,000-mile personal odyssey from the Alaskan tundra to the arid high plains of the American West, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards in Florida to document the cranes' native habitat, flyways and annual journeys. Forsberg's work also recorded the extraordinary human efforts undertaken to raise young birds and return them to their natural habitat, and his exploration reveals the challenges cranes face to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. more...

4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and Snow Angels Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days and Snow Angels. Both films will show through April 24.
On the heels of Cristi Puiu's brilliant The Death of Mr. Lazarescu comes another outstanding picture, 4 Months, 3 Week, and 2 Days, which firmly establishes Romania as a major force in early 21st-century world cinema. Winner of the Palme d'Or at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival, Cristian Mungiu's excruciatingly intense drama is set in Bucharest in the mid-1980s, as Nicolae Ceaucescu and his evil dictatorship continue to reign. In a country where abortion is outlawed, a young college student, Gabita (Laura Vasiliu), finds herself in big trouble. Unsure what to do, she turns to her roommate, Otilia (Anamaria Marinca), for help. The pair connects with a black market doctor Bebe (Vlad Ivanov), in order to take care of Gabita's pregnancy--but, of course, it isn't that simple. The resulting 24 hours reveals a harrowing descent into a world in which the possibility of tragedy lurks around every corner.
Snow Angels, adapted from the novel of the same title by Stewart O'Nan, is two stories of love and loss converging. One is of a recently separated couple attempting to pick up the threads of a future when faced with tragedy. The second is about an awkward young man, currently in the throes of discovering his first romance, forced to deal with the separation and subsequent strife of his parents' relationship. Snow Angels is written and directed by critically acclaimed filmmaker David Gordon Green.
