School of Music Presents Trombone, Tuba & Horn Ensembles
The UNL School of Music presents Trombone, Tuba, and Horn Ensembles at 7:30 p.m. in Kimball Recital Hall. The Large Brass Ensembles Concert features the Husker Horn Choir with Alan Mattingly conducting, the Nebraska Trombone Ensemble under the direction of Scott Anderson, and Craig Fuller conducts the UNL Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble.
The program will include works by Pavel Tchesnokov, Ludwig van Beethoven, Richard Wagner, John Tavener, Randall Snyder, Richard Strauss, K. L. King, John Cheetham, and Henry Fillmore. Tickets are $3 for student/senior, or $5 for general admission and are available at the door approximately one hour before the performance.

'Metaphors of the Heart' Continues at Sheldon
"Metaphors of the Heart," featuring the spiritual and spellbinding photographs of Luis Gonzalez Palma, continues at Sheldon Museum of Art. For more than 20 years, Palma has challenged standard photography through experimenting with media, using a painterly style and incorporating collage. The photographs in the exhibition date between 1989 and 2005.
Born in Guatemala in 1957, Palma was reared in the Catholic Church in the midst of Guatemala's civil war and his early images express the inner strength and beauty of the Mayan people. more...

The Counterfeiters and Gashole Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Counterfeiters and Gashole. Both films will show through April 24.
Adapted from Adolf Burger's memoir The Devil's Workshop, The Counterfeiters is a skillful, absorbing, Oscar-winning Austrian feature that involves a Russian-Jewish counterfeiter (expertly played by Karl Markovics) who gets arrested in Berlin, winds up in a German concentration camp in 1944, and is put in charge of a secret forgery unit. Staffed by prisoners who've been granted special privileges, the unit counterfeits pounds and dollars in a plan to wreck the British and American economies, and one of the prisoners, a member of the communist resistance, attempts to sabotage the effort. Written and directed by the able Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Inheritors), this poses some tricky moral questions, and its troubling ambiguities rank a cut above the dubious uplift of Schindler's List. - Jonathan Rosenbaum, The Chicago Reader
Gashole is a new documentary film about the history of oil prices and the future of alternative fuels. The film, narrated by Peter Gallagher, currently on a national tour replete with special appearances by its directors, features interviews with Doane College professors Les Manns and Brian Pauwels. Directed by Jeremy Wagener & Scott D. Roberts, the film takes a wide, yet detailed examination of our dependence on foreign supplies of oil. The film examines many different potential solutions to our oil dependence. Starting with claims of buried technology that dramatically improves gas mileage, to navigating bureaucratic governmental roadblocks, evaluating different alternative fuels that are technologically available now, and questioning the American consumer's reluctance to embrace alternatives, it examimes how our country has become dependent on imported oil. If you buy gas, you should see this movie.
