UNL Announces New Energy Sciences Minor
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has created a new interdisciplinary minor in energy sciences, beginning in fall 2008. The minor can be declared by students in any undergraduate major, and will provide an opportunity for students to learn about the capture, production, storage and utilization of energy, and the associated energy choices societies must make related to economics and the environment.
"We want students to obtain an understanding of energy, what it has meant to societies historically, and how important energy is to our lives," said Ron Yoder, head of UNL's Department of Biological Systems Engineering and leader of the steering committee that developed the minor. more...

Goldwater scholarships won by 3 UNL students
Three University of Nebraska-Lincoln students, Aaron Fluitt, Corey Georgesen and Robert Woodward, have been awarded Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships for 2008-09 from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation.
Goldwater Scholars are selected based on academic merit, and 321 were awarded from a field of 1,035 mathematics, science and engineering students nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide. The one- and two-year scholarships cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year. Goldwater Scholars have academic qualifications that have garnered the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs. The Counterfeiters and Gashole Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Counterfeiters and Gashole. Both films will show through May 8.
Adapted from Adolf Burger's memoir The Devil's Workshop, The Counterfeiters is a skillful, absorbing, Oscar-winning Austrian feature that involves a Russian-Jewish counterfeiter (expertly played by Karl Markovics) who gets arrested in Berlin, winds up in a German concentration camp in 1944, and is put in charge of a secret forgery unit. Staffed by prisoners who've been granted special privileges, the unit counterfeits pounds and dollars in a plan to wreck the British and American economies, and one of the prisoners, a member of the communist resistance, attempts to sabotage the effort. Written and directed by the able Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Inheritors), this poses some tricky moral questions, and its troubling ambiguities rank a cut above the dubious uplift of Schindler's List. - Jonathan Rosenbaum, The Chicago Reader
Gashole is a new documentary film about the history of oil prices and the future of alternative fuels. The film, narrated by Peter Gallagher, currently on a national tour replete with special appearances by its directors, features interviews with Doane College professors Les Manns and Brian Pauwels. Directed by Jeremy Wagener & Scott D. Roberts, the film takes a wide, yet detailed examination of our dependence on foreign supplies of oil. The film examines many different potential solutions to our oil dependence. Starting with claims of buried technology that dramatically improves gas mileage, to navigating bureaucratic governmental roadblocks, evaluating different alternative fuels that are technologically available now, and questioning the American consumer's reluctance to embrace alternatives, it examimes how our country has become dependent on imported oil. If you buy gas, you should see this movie.
