R Street Closing for Water Main
The city of Lincoln has begun replacing the water mains on 12th, 17th and R streets adjacent to the university's city campus, which will improve water distribution on campus. In order to facilitate the project there will need to be some street closures to accommodate the contractors' work.
Please be advised and plan ahead for these disruptions:
- R street will be closed for off-peak traffic hours (8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.) on Thursday, May 1 to accommodate the 17th street work.
- R street will be closed from 16th to 17th streets for seven days starting May 12 for work in R street.
- The intersection of 12th and R streets will be closed for seven days starting May 19 for work on 12th and R streets.

UPC Presents David Bazan and Grand Archives
Tonight at 7 p.m. on the Nebraska Union Plaza, the University Program Council will host performances by David Bazan (Pedro The Lion) and Sub Pop artists Grand Archives (the new band from Mat Brooke, formerly of Band of Horses and Carissa's Wierd). The event is free and open to the public.
Astronaut Anderson to Talk at Space Law Conference
Nebraska native and NASA astronaut Clayton Anderson will be the featured public speaker for the second annual Space and Telecommunications Law Conference May 1-3 at Cornhusker Marriott, 333 S. 13th St. The event will bring space and telecommunications lawyers and industry officials to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
Anderson's speech at 3 p.m. May 1 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 301 N. 12th St., is free and open to the public. His talk is part of three days of discussions among experts on the "new frontier" legal arena in space and telecommunications law. The Counterfeiters and Gashole Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Counterfeiters and Gashole. Both films will show through May 8.
Adapted from Adolf Burger's memoir The Devil's Workshop, The Counterfeiters is a skillful, absorbing, Oscar-winning Austrian feature that involves a Russian-Jewish counterfeiter (expertly played by Karl Markovics) who gets arrested in Berlin, winds up in a German concentration camp in 1944, and is put in charge of a secret forgery unit. Staffed by prisoners who've been granted special privileges, the unit counterfeits pounds and dollars in a plan to wreck the British and American economies, and one of the prisoners, a member of the communist resistance, attempts to sabotage the effort. Written and directed by the able Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Inheritors), this poses some tricky moral questions, and its troubling ambiguities rank a cut above the dubious uplift of Schindler's List. - Jonathan Rosenbaum, The Chicago Reader
Gashole is a new documentary film about the history of oil prices and the future of alternative fuels. The film, narrated by Peter Gallagher, currently on a national tour replete with special appearances by its directors, features interviews with Doane College professors Les Manns and Brian Pauwels. Directed by Jeremy Wagener & Scott D. Roberts, the film takes a wide, yet detailed examination of our dependence on foreign supplies of oil. The film examines many different potential solutions to our oil dependence. Starting with claims of buried technology that dramatically improves gas mileage, to navigating bureaucratic governmental roadblocks, evaluating different alternative fuels that are technologically available now, and questioning the American consumer's reluctance to embrace alternatives, it examimes how our country has become dependent on imported oil. If you buy gas, you should see this movie.
