Sarnak Delivers Rowlee Lecture
Peter Sarnak of the Institute for Advanced Study will deliver the Howard Rowlee Lecture at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 2 in 115 Avery Hall. The lecture will is hosted by the Department of Math and will be preceded by a reception in 348 Avery Hall from 3:15 - 3:50 p.m.
Sarnak has made major contributions to number theory, and to questions in analysis motivated by number theory. His interest in mathematics is wide-ranging, and his research focuses on the theory of zeta functions and automorphic forms with applications to number theory, combinatorics, and mathematical physics.

UNL Makes More Than $23 Million in Scholarship Offers to Nebraska Seniors
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln has announced the awarding of nearly 3,500 scholarships to seniors at Nebraska high schools. The total potential value of the scholarships is more than $23 million.
The awards are comprised of 781 Regents Scholarships (including 254 Nebraska Top Scholars), 177 Nebraska Achievement Scholarships, 264 David Distinguished Scholarships, 1,938 James H. Canfield Scholarships, 94 Chancellor's Leadership Class scholarships and 63 Pepsi Scholarships. more...

Sheldon Statewide Exhibit, 'Particles to Planets,' Opens
The Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will present "From Particles to Planets, Exploring the Physical in Art" -- its annual statewide touring exhibition -- in Lincoln from May 2 to Aug. 17.
An opening reception for the exhibition, which will be on view in eight communities across Nebraska during the next year, will be 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, May 2. The exhibition and reception are free and open to the public. more...

The Friends of the Center for Great Plains Studies will present the fourth annual Great Plains Invitational Art Show and Sale at the Great Plains Art Museum May 2 through 11. The Counterfeiters and Gashole Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Counterfeiters and Gashole. Both films will show through May 8.
Adapted from Adolf Burger's memoir The Devil's Workshop, The Counterfeiters is a skillful, absorbing, Oscar-winning Austrian feature that involves a Russian-Jewish counterfeiter (expertly played by Karl Markovics) who gets arrested in Berlin, winds up in a German concentration camp in 1944, and is put in charge of a secret forgery unit. Staffed by prisoners who've been granted special privileges, the unit counterfeits pounds and dollars in a plan to wreck the British and American economies, and one of the prisoners, a member of the communist resistance, attempts to sabotage the effort. Written and directed by the able Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Inheritors), this poses some tricky moral questions, and its troubling ambiguities rank a cut above the dubious uplift of Schindler's List. - Jonathan Rosenbaum, The Chicago Reader
Gashole is a new documentary film about the history of oil prices and the future of alternative fuels. The film, narrated by Peter Gallagher, currently on a national tour replete with special appearances by its directors, features interviews with Doane College professors Les Manns and Brian Pauwels. Directed by Jeremy Wagener & Scott D. Roberts, the film takes a wide, yet detailed examination of our dependence on foreign supplies of oil. The film examines many different potential solutions to our oil dependence. Starting with claims of buried technology that dramatically improves gas mileage, to navigating bureaucratic governmental roadblocks, evaluating different alternative fuels that are technologically available now, and questioning the American consumer's reluctance to embrace alternatives, it examimes how our country has become dependent on imported oil. If you buy gas, you should see this movie.
