Sorensen Establishes Public Service Scholarship for UNL Students
Former adviser to President John F. Kennedy and University of Nebraska graduate Theodore "Ted" Sorensen has established a scholarship for outstanding students interested in public service.
The Theodore C. Sorensen Public Service Scholarship is a permanently endowed fund created with a gift of $55,000 to the University of Nebraska Foundation with an additional commitment of $150,000. The scholarship will be awarded annually by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Arts and Sciences to one or more seniors who have demonstrated superior academic performance and who have demonstrated a commitment to public service of the United States.more...
Seefeldt Maps Jefferson's Vision of the West
When Thomas Jefferson daydreamed about the American West, what did he imagine? With the information that was available to him at the time, how could Jefferson - who never traveled farther west than Virginia - conceive of this vast region?
Doug Seefeldt, assistant professor of history, has an answer. By collecting and cataloging maps, correspondence, treaties, journal entries, books and statutes, he has created "Envisaging the West: Thomas Jefferson and the Roots of Lewis and Clark," Jefferson's West is an interactive, thematic digital history project that explores the third U.S. president's relationship with the expanding borders of his country. more...

The Counterfeiters and Gashole Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Counterfeiters and Gashole. Both films will show through May 8.
Adapted from Adolf Burger's memoir The Devil's Workshop, The Counterfeiters is a skillful, absorbing, Oscar-winning Austrian feature that involves a Russian-Jewish counterfeiter (expertly played by Karl Markovics) who gets arrested in Berlin, winds up in a German concentration camp in 1944, and is put in charge of a secret forgery unit. Staffed by prisoners who've been granted special privileges, the unit counterfeits pounds and dollars in a plan to wreck the British and American economies, and one of the prisoners, a member of the communist resistance, attempts to sabotage the effort. Written and directed by the able Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Inheritors), this poses some tricky moral questions, and its troubling ambiguities rank a cut above the dubious uplift of Schindler's List. - Jonathan Rosenbaum, The Chicago Reader
Gashole is a new documentary film about the history of oil prices and the future of alternative fuels. The film, narrated by Peter Gallagher, currently on a national tour replete with special appearances by its directors, features interviews with Doane College professors Les Manns and Brian Pauwels. Directed by Jeremy Wagener & Scott D. Roberts, the film takes a wide, yet detailed examination of our dependence on foreign supplies of oil. The film examines many different potential solutions to our oil dependence. Starting with claims of buried technology that dramatically improves gas mileage, to navigating bureaucratic governmental roadblocks, evaluating different alternative fuels that are technologically available now, and questioning the American consumer's reluctance to embrace alternatives, it examimes how our country has become dependent on imported oil. If you buy gas, you should see this movie.
