Forsberg's 'On Ancient Wings' Exhibit Celebrates Sandhill Cranes
An exhibit of photographs by Lincoln photographer Michael Forsberg at the University of Nebraska State Museum coincides with the sandhill cranes' arrival in Nebraska. Through 44 stunning color photographs, "On Ancient Wings," on exhibit through Aug. 14 in the museum's third-floor Cooper Gallery, intertwines the lives of cranes, people and their common places.
Forsberg engaged in an extraordinary five-year, 65,000-mile personal odyssey from the Alaskan tundra to the arid high plains of the American West, from Cuban nature preserves to suburban backyards in Florida to document the cranes' native habitat, flyways and annual journeys. Forsberg's work also recorded the extraordinary human efforts undertaken to raise young birds and return them to their natural habitat, and his exploration reveals the challenges cranes face to adapt and survive in a rapidly changing natural world. more...

'Poets on Painters' Exhibit Continues at Sheldon Museum of Art
A visual and literary exhibition that pairs 20 contemporary poets with 20 contemporary paintings, "Poets on Painters," continues at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Sheldon Museum of Art. Each poet's response to a painting will be displayed alongside the artwork.
A sampling of today's written and visual arts, "Poets on Painters" focuses on the intrinsic and fascinating connections between two of the oldest art forms as seen by some of their newest practitioners. The exhibition recalls 20th-century collaborations between Apollinaire and Duchamp, Stein and Picasso, and O'Hara and Rivers in its playful examination of how poetry and painting converge and diverge in the 21st century. more...

The Counterfeiters and Gashole Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Counterfeiters and Gashole. Both films will show through May 8.
Adapted from Adolf Burger's memoir The Devil's Workshop, The Counterfeiters is a skillful, absorbing, Oscar-winning Austrian feature that involves a Russian-Jewish counterfeiter (expertly played by Karl Markovics) who gets arrested in Berlin, winds up in a German concentration camp in 1944, and is put in charge of a secret forgery unit. Staffed by prisoners who've been granted special privileges, the unit counterfeits pounds and dollars in a plan to wreck the British and American economies, and one of the prisoners, a member of the communist resistance, attempts to sabotage the effort. Written and directed by the able Stefan Ruzowitzky (The Inheritors), this poses some tricky moral questions, and its troubling ambiguities rank a cut above the dubious uplift of Schindler's List. - Jonathan Rosenbaum, The Chicago Reader
Gashole is a new documentary film about the history of oil prices and the future of alternative fuels. The film, narrated by Peter Gallagher, currently on a national tour replete with special appearances by its directors, features interviews with Doane College professors Les Manns and Brian Pauwels. Directed by Jeremy Wagener & Scott D. Roberts, the film takes a wide, yet detailed examination of our dependence on foreign supplies of oil. The film examines many different potential solutions to our oil dependence. Starting with claims of buried technology that dramatically improves gas mileage, to navigating bureaucratic governmental roadblocks, evaluating different alternative fuels that are technologically available now, and questioning the American consumer's reluctance to embrace alternatives, it examimes how our country has become dependent on imported oil. If you buy gas, you should see this movie.
