UNL research funding climbs to nearly $106 million in 2007-08
External funding for research at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln set a record again this year of nearly $106 million, according to the UNL Office of Research.
Research funding, which totaled $105.7 million for the fiscal year ending June 30, includes all external funds awarded for university research projects. Funding increased 3.2 percent from $102.4 million a year earlier. Of this year's total, $72 million came from federal sources, including the National Science Foundation, National Institutes of Health, Department of Energy, Department of Education and other agencies. 735 to Receive Degrees at UNL Commencement Exercises
Approximately 735 students will receive degrees at University of Nebraska-Lincoln commencement exercises Aug. 15 and 16. Chancellor Harvey Perlman will preside at the ceremonies, one for doctoral degree recipients at 3:30 p.m. Aug. 15 at the Lied Center for Performing Arts, 301 N. 12th St., and the main commencement exercises for all other degrees at 9:30 a.m. Aug. 16 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center, 27th and Theresa streets.
UNL historian Thomas "Tim" Borstelmann will address graduates at the Aug. 16 ceremony, with a talk titled "Reading the Signs of the Times." Miles T. Bryant, professor of educational administration at UNL, will give the address, titled "A Hooding Speech," at the doctoral ceremony. more...

The Wackness and The Fall Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Wackness and The Fall. Both films will show through August 28.
In The Wackness, it's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana--but change is in the air. The newly inaugurated mayor, Rudy Giuliani, is beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against "crimes" like noisy portable radios, graffiti and public drunkenness. Set against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Ben Kingsley) for therapy, while crushing on his step-daughter (Olivia Thirlby). Famke Janssen, Mary Kate Olsen, and Method Man round out the cast in this edgy, bittersweet and funny coming of age story.
The Fall takes place in Los Angeles circa 1920's. An immigrant girl (Catinca Untaru) finds herself in a hospital recovering from a fall. She strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man (Lee Pace) who captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination. Making sure he keeps the girl interested in the story he interweaves her family and people she likes from the hospital into his tale. Shot on location in 28 countries around the world, award-winning music video, commercial and film director Tarsem Singh weaves a visually sumptuous film full of exotic characters and breathtaking landscapes.
