Tips for Creating an Eco Room
ASUN, Housing, Admissions and University Communications have teamed up to create a virtual tour of an "eco-chic" dorm room, to help students moving back to campus minimize their environmental footprint. The sample room's décor mixes secondhand accessories and dishware, eco-friendly personal care and cleaning products, and a few new items that reflect environmentally responsible manufacturing practices.
Annotated photos of the room and a downloadable PDF tip sheet are available at the housing website. Students can learn how to swap out traditional light bulbs for compact fluorescents, browse thrift stores for funky and unique decorations, invest in highly sustainable, pesticide-free bamboo bedding, and choose a refillable water bottle over throw-away singe-serving plastic.

King Exhibit Continues at Sheldon Museum of Art
A mid-career survey, "The Sizes of Things in the Mind's Eye," continues at the Sheldon Museum of Art on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus, presents approximately 65 sculptures, film animations, installations, drawings and photographs by artist Elizabeth King. The artist will give a lecture about her work in the Sheldon's Ethel S. Abbott Auditorium at 2 p.m. Oct. 10.
King combines her meticulously wrought figurative sculptures with stop-frame film animation in installations that blur the boundary between actual and virtual space. Intimate in scale and distinguished by a level of craft that solicits close viewing, this work reflects her interests in early clockwork automata, the history of the mannequin and the puppet, and literature's host of legends in which the inanimate or artificial figure comes to life. more...

The Wackness and The Fall Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Wackness and The Fall. Both films will show through August 28.
In The Wackness, it's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana--but change is in the air. The newly inaugurated mayor, Rudy Giuliani, is beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against "crimes" like noisy portable radios, graffiti and public drunkenness. Set against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Ben Kingsley) for therapy, while crushing on his step-daughter (Olivia Thirlby). Famke Janssen, Mary Kate Olsen, and Method Man round out the cast in this edgy, bittersweet and funny coming of age story.
The Fall takes place in Los Angeles circa 1920's. An immigrant girl (Catinca Untaru) finds herself in a hospital recovering from a fall. She strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man (Lee Pace) who captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination. Making sure he keeps the girl interested in the story he interweaves her family and people she likes from the hospital into his tale. Shot on location in 28 countries around the world, award-winning music video, commercial and film director Tarsem Singh weaves a visually sumptuous film full of exotic characters and breathtaking landscapes.
