US News Rankings Again Show Improved UNL
For the fifth straight year, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln has made U.S. News and World Report's annual evaluation of America's Best Colleges' Top 50 list of Public National Universities. UNL is ranked near the top third of all national universities both public and private, (89th out of 264), and is tied with four other universities, including the University of Kansas and Iowa State University, as 40th out of 164 public universities in the "Top 50" list for public national universities. This places UNL among the top one-fourth of all public universities.
In the past five years, UNL has moved from 107 to 89 in the "Best National Universities" list and from 52nd to 40 in the "Public National" universities. The 2009 rankings were released at midnight eastern time today. more...

'Celebration Threads' gala reception Aug. 24 at Hillestad Gallery
A gala closing reception honoring the artist of the exhibition, "Celebration Threads: New Twists by Robert Hillestad" at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Robert Hillestad Textiles Gallery, will be 2 to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 in the Home Economics Building on UNL's East Campus.

Full Weekend of Activities Slated for Big Red Welcome
When thousands of new and returning Huskers converge on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the highlight of their arrival will be the annual Big Red Welcome presented by University Bookstore: a convocation, celebration and festival spanning the entire weekend.
Beginning Aug. 22 with the New Student Convocation and ending with the Welcome Festival at 6 p.m. Sunday Aug. 24, the weekend is a tradition, complete with the highlight for many, doing the "Tunnel Walk" at Memorial Stadium - running from the team tunnel, to the music, video and cheers at Memorial Stadium just like the Husker football team. The Tunnel Walk for new students is 8:15 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22 following the 7 p.m. Marching Band Concert (which is free and open to the public). more...

Big Move-in Days
Welcome to the thousands of students who will move in today and tomorrow.
With some careful planning and patience, this can be one of the most exciting days for you and your family and friends who are here to help.
It's a good idea to give a last-minute check to the housing move-in web site where you can find specific instructions for parking, checking in, and hours for your residence hall. Don't forget: Have your NCard ready. You'll need it to check in.
During move-in weekend, certain parking lots will be designated as one-hour unloading zones only. Just as you hope to have a place near your building to unload, so do other families moving in after you. When you are done unloading, Parking Services will direct you to a nearby parking area where you can leave your car while you finish unpacking and getting settled. Please see the map for these specific areas.

The Wackness and The Fall Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Wackness and The Fall. Both films will show through August 28.
In The Wackness, it's the summer of 1994, and the streets of New York are pulsing with hip-hop and wafting with the sweet aroma of marijuana--but change is in the air. The newly inaugurated mayor, Rudy Giuliani, is beginning to implement his anti-fun initiatives against "crimes" like noisy portable radios, graffiti and public drunkenness. Set against this backdrop, Luke Shapiro (Josh Peck) spends his last summer before college selling dope throughout New York City, trading it with his shrink (Ben Kingsley) for therapy, while crushing on his step-daughter (Olivia Thirlby). Famke Janssen, Mary Kate Olsen, and Method Man round out the cast in this edgy, bittersweet and funny coming of age story.
The Fall takes place in Los Angeles circa 1920's. An immigrant girl (Catinca Untaru) finds herself in a hospital recovering from a fall. She strikes up a friendship with a bedridden man (Lee Pace) who captivates her with a whimsical story that removes her far from the hospital doldrums into the exotic landscapes of her imagination. Making sure he keeps the girl interested in the story he interweaves her family and people she likes from the hospital into his tale. Shot on location in 28 countries around the world, award-winning music video, commercial and film director Tarsem Singh weaves a visually sumptuous film full of exotic characters and breathtaking landscapes.
