UNL is officially closed during the annual holiday shutdown period. Offices will reopen at 8 a.m. Jan. 5, 2009. However, many university buildings across campus will have special hours over the holiday break. Why is it so difficult to sway people who care deeply about politics no matter how compelling the facts or persuasive the prose? University of Nebraska-Lincoln research may help to answer these questions.
By monitoring people's physical sensitivities to things like sudden noises and threatening visual images, political scientists were able to conclude that physiological reactions help predict variations in political beliefs. more...

Ground Broken for New Gaughan Multicultural Center
Chancellor Harvey Perlman, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Juan N. Franco, Dean of Undergraduate Studies Rita Kean and ASUN president Emily Zimmer and other student representatives gathered for a special ground-breaking event to celebrate the start of construction of the new Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
The celebration was Sept. 19 on the Nebraska Union Plaza. The new multicultural center is a stated priority of the chancellor as an important step in securing and expanding the progress we have made in our diversity efforts as a campus. more...

UNL Bullying Research Featured in New Online Resource
University of Nebraska-Lincoln research on bullying is featured in a new online resource for parents at Education.com, co-sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators. Guest editors for the special online edition at Education.com are Shelley Hymel and Susan Swearer, co-directors of the Bullying Research Network headquartered at UNL. Celebration events included a keynote address by Richard Sincovec, a tour of the facilities, talks by other speakers, a formal dedication of the new Schorr Center for Computer Science and Engineering, and a pre-game party before the Nebraska-Virginia Tech football game on Saturday. more...
