The fifth annual East Campus Dessert Competition will be held on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. in the Arbor Suite, Nebraska East Union. Eat or compete in four categories for free! For rules and registration information, visit the Student Involvement website.

IQSC Taking Registrations for The Global Quilt

The symposium "The Global Quilt: Cultural Contexts" is attracting scholars and artists from Great Britain, Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Japan, France, India, Ireland, and Korea to join U.S. counterparts in Lincoln April 2-4. They will share papers and presentations, and network at the academic gathering hosted by the International Quilt Study Center. The symposium’s purpose is to explore the full breadth of contexts in which the quiltmaker's art is expressed and transmitted among and across cultures.

Registration information is now available for students, faculty, and staff at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum website.

Celebrating Darwin's Legacy Symposium at UNL

"Celebrating Darwin's Legacy" is the theme of the Center for Great Plains Studies' 35th interdisciplinary symposium March 26-28 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The symposium will bring a diverse group of scholars to UNL in recognition of the bicentennial anniversary of Charles Darwin's birth and the 150th anniversary of his "Origin of Species."

The conference will open March 26 at the Great Plains Art Museum, 1155 Q St., with a 6 p.m. reception and keynote talk by Randy Moore. Moore is the H.T. Morse-alumni distinguished teaching professor of biology at the University of Minnesota. Moore will speak on "The Creationist Down the Hall: The Extent and Impact of Teaching Evolution and Creationism in Public Schools." He is the co-author of "Evolution 101." Moore's talk starts at 7 p.m. and is free and open to the public. more...

 

Blue Note 70th
Blue Note Records' 70th Anniversary Tour at Lied Center

To mark the 70th anniversary of the premier jazz label Blue Note Records, an all-star band celebrating the rich legacy of jazz will make a stop at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's Lied Center for Performing Arts at 7:30 p.m. In honor of Blue Note Record's 70th anniversary, brilliant pianist Bill Charlap will lead an outstanding band of musicians on a world tour as "The Blue Note 7," featuring guitarist Peter Berstein, saxophonist Ravi Coltrane (son of Jon Coltrane), drummer Lewis Nash, trumpeter Nicholas Payton, bassist Peter Washington and saxophonist Steve Wilson.

Tickets for this performance are $42 and $32. Area college and university students with a valid I.D., as well as youths age 18 and younger, may purchase tickets for half price. Call the Lied ticket office at (402) 472-4747 or (800) 432-3231 for availability. Regular ticket office hours at the Lied Center, 301 N. 12th St., are 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. weekdays. For weekday evening performances, Lied Center Ticket Office hours are from 11 a.m. until 30 minutes after show time. Tickets may also be purchased online at the Lied Center website.
