Jazz In June Continues With ZARO featuring Andrew Vogt
Now in its 18th season, the Jazz in June concert series will present Tuesday evenings of great jazz in the great outdoors on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln campus. Organized by the Sheldon Art Association, the Berman Music Foundation and the UNL School of Music, this year's free jazz series is presented by Baylor Evnen. The concerts begin at 7 p.m. and draw thousands under the trees on the plaza west of Sheldon Museum of Art, 12th and R streets.
This week, ZARO featuring Andrew Vogt, specialize in high-energy jazz with occasional diversions into funk and rhythm and blues. Vogt has strong ties to Lincoln, as he graduated from East High School in 1989 and earned a degree in music at UNL before spending three years playing for guests nightly on Caribbean cruise ships. Vogt released his first solo CD, "Action Plan," in 2006. In addition to Vogt, ZARO musicians are Zach Rothenbuelleron guitar, Oscar Desoto on drums and Roger Barnhardt on bass. more...

The Secret of the Grain, and One Day You'll Understand Play at the Ross
UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents The Secret of the Grain and One Day You'll Understand. Both films will show through June 11.

The Secret of the Grain is a touching and resoundingly humanistic story set in the rustic port of Sete in southeastern France. Slimane has worked in the same shipyard job for over 35 years, when his growing dissatisfaction prompts him to try to open his own restaurant. His dream seems unbelievable, but his contagious conviction and persistence work their way into the hearts of his loyal but dispersed family: the four children from his first marriage, his ex-wife, current girlfriend and her bright, outspoken daughter, Rym (played to great acclaim by the stunning newcomer Hafsia Herzi). A grand film about ordinary people, The Secret of the Grain is a deliciously slow-burning drama about fate, food and family.
One Day You'll Understand is set in Paris, 1987. As the trial of Lyon's Gestapo head Klaus Barbie plays out on television, French businessman Victor Bastien (Hippolyte Girardot) finds himself distracted from his work and increasingly obsessed with piecing together the truth about his family's history. As he sorts through photographs, letters and memorabilia, the documents he discovers - including an Aryan declaration written by his father – tell of the fate that befell his parents during the war, and he is quick to rush to judgment. But to his frustration, his mother Rivka (Jeanne Moreau) has shuttered away her past and refuses to share any memories with him. With tensions growing between Victor and his sister Tania (Dominique Blanc) – who defends their father's declaration and mother’s silence – his wife (Emmanuelle Devos) and children accompany him on a visit to the tiny village where Rivka’s parents were forced to hide during the war. And as Victor finally begins to reconcile himself with his family’s fate, Rivka makes the decision to confide her past to the members of her family who may have a chance at shaping the future.
