UNL Husker Spiritfest is April 15-18
Husker Spirit Fest

The Nebraska Alumni Association welcomes the community to celebrate Husker Spiritfest, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's annual spring homecoming. A variety of events, including guided campus tours, lectures, luncheons, concerts and performances, the Red-White spring football game and other athletic contests are planned across campus for the four-day celebration April 15-18.

This year's schedule is highlighted by two special events on April 16: the Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center dedication 5-6:30 p.m. and the alumni association's Football Friday Spring Game Edition 6:30-9 p.m. at the Wick Alumni Center, 1520 R St. (doors open at 5:30). Both are free and open to the public. The Wick Alumni Center will greet guests at check-in 10 a.m.-5 p.m. April 15, 9 a.m.-9 p.m. April 16, and 9 a.m.-noon on April 17, where maps and a list of events and special offers will be available. more...

Trailside Museum Unveils New Art Inspired by Nebraska Fossils

On April 15, the Trailside Museum of Natural History at Fort Robinson State Park near Crawford will open a new permanent paleontology exhibit featuring art by Mark Marcuson.

The exhibit consists of 18 scientific reconstructions of ancient animals that roamed Nebraska at various times over the last 40 million years. The full-color panels include scientific information and illustrate how these creatures looked based on fossil material in the research collections of the University of Nebraska State Museum and elsewhere. The public is invited to a free open house at the Trailside Museum to celebrate the exhibit from 2 to 7 p.m. (MDT) April 15. more...

 

34th Annual Modern Language Fair at UNL

The Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will host its 34th annual language fair 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. in the Nebraska Union.

The fair provides an opportunity for high school students from across the state studying Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish to demonstrate their acquisition of language and culture in various competitive events. Events are judged by the faculty and graduate students of the UNL Department of Modern Languages and Literatures. In addition, mini-lessons are offered throughout the day by departmental personnel in a variety of languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Czech, Japanese, Russian and Swahili. Approximately 800 high school students and teachers will attend.

 

APC hearing April 23

Deadline for submitting written responses or sending a notice to appear on the updated proposed recommendations from the Dean for the FY2010 budget reductions in the College of Arts and Sciences prior to the April 23 budget hearing is 3 p.m. April 16. The updated proposed recommendations are available for download.

Responses and notices to appear should be sent to Academic Planning Committee, c/o Dr. William Nunez, APC Secretary, 332 Canfield Administration Building, 0435, or wnunez2@unl.edu by 3 p.m., April 16.

Dead Sea Scrolls Subject of Spring Nebraska Lecture

Excitement, intensive research, rumor and controversy have surrounded the Dead Sea Scrolls since their discovery more than 60 years ago. The scrolls will be the focus of the spring Nebraska Lecture at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Sidnie White Crawford, Willa Cather professor and professor and chair of classics and religious studies, will discuss their discovery, study and publication, as well as controversies and rumors related to these manuscripts.

The free public lecture, "The Dead Sea Scrolls After 60 Years: What Have We Learned?" will be 3:30 p.m. April 15, in the Nebraska Union auditorium, 1400 R St., with a reception following. The presentation is part of The Nebraska Lectures: Chancellor's Distinguished Lecture Series. more...

Weeklong Gaughan Dedication Events Highlight New Multicultural Center

The University of Nebraska-Lincoln will celebrate diversity, students and family April 12-16 at a week of dedication events surrounding the new Jackie Gaughan Multicultural Center. At 7 p.m., Campus Night Life will host a party in the Gaughan Center featuring an international karaoke competition with a disc jockey playing culturally diverse songs representing the many tastes of UNL students.

UNL's Mary Riepma Ross Media Arts Center presents Fish Tank and A Prophet. Fish Tank will screen through April 15, while A Prophet will show through April 22.
