Water for Food Institute
Robert B. Daugherty Foundation's $50 Million Gift Will Fund Global Water for Food Institute at UNL

The University of Nebraska announced a $50 million founding gift from the Robert B. Daugherty Charitable Foundation to support a new global Water for Food Institute. The gift, one of the largest in the university’s history, will create a multi-campus center for research, education and policy analysis relating to use of water for agriculture. The institute will be housed in Whittier, eventually at the new Innovation Campus.

Water for food is one of the top priorities identified by the University of Nebraska in its $1.2 billion Campaign for Nebraska.

NU President James B. Milliken said the gift allows the university to become a global resource for developing solutions to the challenges of hunger, poverty, agricultural productivity and water management. It will provide opportunities for regional, national and international partnerships and collaborations with other public and private institutions around the world, opportunities for research fellows and student fellowship programs, and in addition to research, support key areas and support for conference, workshops and educational activities that share those research results.

Gabrielle Louise and David Rynhart
Colorado Musician Celebrating Earth Week at UNL With Workshop

Gabrielle Louise, a Denver-based songwriter and musician, will share her practical experience and knowledge of carbon footprint reduction with alternative fuel sources at a 3 p.m. environmental workshop and a 7 p.m. concert April 21 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Louise has traveled more than 50,000 miles, sparing the atmosphere of more than 11 tons of carbon dioxide and saving almost $9,000 in fuel costs by touring in a van powered by waste vegetable oil -- her fuel of choice. In the free workshop, Louise will cover her motivations, her story and the how-to and discussions on the economic and environmental impact that should have widespread interest to students including those in business, environmental studies and music programs. The workshop is in the Nebraska Union Auditorium. She will perform live at the Nebraska Union Plaza. In the event of inclement weather, the concert moves to the Crib area inside the Union. more...
