Maxwell Arboretum Walking Tours Offered on Tuesday
University of Nebraska-Lincoln Gardens will sponsor a series of informal spring walking tours Tuesdays in the Earl G. Maxwell Arboretum on UNL's East Campus. Throughout the season, the arboretum goes through rapid changes. These tours, from noon to 1 p.m. each Tuesday through May 11, will guide visitors to the current week's highlights. Participants should meet at the Karl Loerch Gazebo located one block east of the UNL Dairy Store just off Holdrege Street. Some metered parking is available on the East Campus Loop south of the arboretum.
The tours will be led by Emily Levine, Special Projects Research Horticulturist with the Department of Agronomy and Horticulture. They are free and open to the public. Students can supplement their formal horticultural education, faculty and staff can gain more knowledge about their campuses' gardens, homeowners can get ideas for their own yards, and everyone can appreciate the beauty and science of the plants in the arboretum. more...

More Than 2,500 Receive Degrees at May 7-8 UNL Commencements
Nearly 2,600 students received degrees from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in commencement exercises May 7 and 8. UNL conducted separate commencement exercises for postgraduate (May 7), baccalaureate (May 8) and law (May 8) degrees.
Jeff Raikes, chief executive officer of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and benefactor of the Jeffrey S. Raikes School of Computer Science and Management at UNL, delivered the commencement address to some 2,000 graduates at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. He also received an honorary degree and his late brother, Ron Raikes, received the Nebraska Builder Award. more...
National Semiconductor Honors UNL Alumnus With Named Fellowship Fund

National Semiconductor Corp. has honored University of Nebraska-Lincoln alumnus Brian L. Halla with a named student fellowship fund for the College of Engineering. Halla serves as executive chairman of the Santa Clara, Calif.-based company and was chief executive officer for 14 years before retiring from that position in 2009.
National Semiconductor made a $100,000 gift commitment to the University of Nebraska Foundation in support of the Campaign for Nebraska. The gift establishes the Brian L. Halla-National Semiconductor Fellowship Fund and will provide two annual fellowship awards over the next six years to assist graduate students pursuing a master's degree in the department of electrical engineering. The first fellowship will be awarded for the fall semester. more...
Saving World's Grasslands Theme of Spring Issue of Great Plains Research
Great Plains Research, a publication of the Center for Great Plains Studies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, begins its 20th year of publication with its spring issue devoted to "Saving the World's Grasslands."
The authors presented their papers at an April 2009 workshop in Lincoln on "Grasslands of the World" sponsored by The Grassland Foundation, World Wildlife Fund, Denver Zoological Foundation and several sponsors at UNL, including the Center for Great Plains Studies, Center for Grasslands Studies, School of Natural Resources, and the Nebraska Rural Initiative. more...
